When someone we love goes away

I've always wondered what it felt like for people who lose their loved ones. I didn't have to wonder anymore when my lovely aunt passed away yesterday.

I am still in shock and can't believe 3 days ago was the last time i would ever hear her voice..and no, i will not be seeing her again, not in this life.

We cry because our loss hurts. For afterall, it is OUR loss. The person we weep for is in a better and would rather we celebrate.

Rest in peace Aunty. You will be sorely missed.

Weird things people do with Facebook

Facebook is not just a social media anymore, its now a 'toasting' media. May the smoothest talker win. i have many grudges with the site but like one of those necessary evils, i cant avoid taking a peek at people's profiles once in a while. For some, its a journal, with details (sordid and mild) of their private lives for all to view and "like".

For others, Facebook is a medium of attack. If someone offends you, i heard it's more effective to state the offence on your facebook status while everyone else wonders who could be owing you money or who broke your heart. This tactic, i heard it is supposed to make the guilty 'friend' crawl back to you or seeth in anger while plotting their own status attack! Intersteing heh? see why they've got most of us hooked? Some people (like me) are addicted to gist and can even be described as pathological people watchers. We love to find out who just had a baby and who the baby looks like. We love to 'like' people's wedding photos and 'awwwww' over pictures of couples in their intimate moments.

Some people's fingers are so sticky on the like button that even if Osama Bin Laden posted something like this ' I just had a wonderful time flying two planes into the world trade center buildings',  I am sure he will get someone to 'like' the update. Who in the world likes those crazy updates?

Now, back to facebook as a tool for toasting. I received a message on facebook that quotes:

"you seem to be a doctor. i am sick and my head jst started spinning thinking of u since last night what can i do to u quench it?"

This is just one out of a couple of messages i get once in a while from people who actually have pictures on their profile.(seriously?!!) At first i thought it couldn't be anything but spam but then again...you never know. Crazy world we live in.

Busy Bee

I have not been blogging much these days. In fact, i have not been doing much of anything but being busy! Yea...my lasagna making days are over..gone with my weekends! If you can guess by now, i'm now a working class chic. lol (i wish) But anyways, i now have a job besides staying home experimenting with recipes and blogging of course! Soooo.... in between all that and moving into a new apartment, ive been busy.

Its not an easy job but im glad it pays. Woman must wack na (abi no be so?) Anyways, thats not an excuse if i intend to be a writer someday in the future i must write!

So here i am in McDonalds (yea i dont have internet access yet) blogging. I just hope i don't get huge on the food here all in the name of blogging!

So on and on i blab....How are u guys? any gist for me (i like to amuse myself sometimes, indulge me please)

I read Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid and i think its simply fantastic. Books like that leave me miserable cos i cant help wishing i could write as good as people like Ms Kincaid. Anyways, i totally recommend the book and will be back for a full review. Also currently reading Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat. Two reviews coming up soon.

Cheers!

When Friends are Scarce

A poem for my very special reader (s)
You know yourself
Yea...you
This is for you

This is for you dear friend
You who chose to stand by me
When world turned its back
This is for you mi amore.

You who remembers not to forget
Every single memory we made
In a place where all we had was love
This is for you mi amore.

For making me smile when i didnt want to
Telling me the truth when it made me mad
Laughing at my silly ways
This is for you mi amore.

I choose not to forget you
Your voice that still brings comfort
Strangely so after all these years
Nuestro amor nunca morirĂ¡.

Making Meat Pies

Boredom has a way of bringing out the best (or worst) in us. It all depends on what we choose. Although i have to admit that making the right choice isn't always easy but anything is possible.

So lately, i've been staying at home doing nothing but read, read, eat, eat and you'd think i would put some time into blogging (ha ha ha).

At least i'm doing things worth blogging about...not sure anyone would want to read about everything though. So let me entice you with my Meat Pie recipe and pictures.

Needless to say that making meatpies isn't exactly as easy as a piece of pie (forgive the pun) I tried it once thinking i'd just mix all the ingredients and scoffing the measurements. Well it turns out i made meat stones instead!

So yesterday, i gave it another try and im posting the recipe/pictures for people like me with enough time on their hands. Expect more recipes from this blog if i dont procastinate!

Meat Pie Recipe (Naija Style)

Meat Filling

-small potatoes, diced and cooked (to save time, use frozen hash brown potato cubes)

-lean ground beef (or chicken, or turkey)

-frozen mixed vegetables, cooked (I use the peas, carrots and corn mix)

-onion diced

-red and green sweet peppers, diced

- seasonings (salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, knorr/maggie etc, whatever you like)

Dough

1/2 cup butter (1 stick) (it should be cold and hard)

1 1/2 cups flour

1 teaspoon salt

4-6 tablespoons ice water

-Prepare the filling by browning your meat and spices. WHile it's cooking, stirfry your peppers and onion and veggies. Mix it all together. Taste and adjust seasoning to taste.

-Once ground beef is cooked, add the diced cooked potatoes and heat for 5 minutes. (not too much potatoes). The main purpose is to aborb excesss liquid from the meat mixture, so that you don't end up with soggy meat pies.

-To make dough: Sift together dry ingredients and cut the butter into the dry ingredients with a fork until mixture is crumbly.

-While mixing with a wooden spoon, add water a tablespoon at a time until dough holds together in a ball (you may need more or less water. Just add small amounts at a time). If the dough is crumbly, add a little more water by drops until the dough stays together when you pinch it.

-When dough comes together into a ball roll out the dough until flat.

- Cut out circles (I use a giant cookie cutter for this). If dough becomes sticky or too soft put in fridge for 10 minutes to cool and then take it out again and continue cutting the circles.

-Place meat stuffing in center of pastry circles.

-Fold over and seal using a fork.

-Bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until lightly browned.

Note: This recipe doesnt exactly make the softest meat pies but im still trying to find out what its lacking...

Adele

Apart from my ability to comprehend how a girl like this could go by a name that seems so african...the operative word being "seems" here... mind you, there was nothing fascinating about Adele (Uh-dell)

And as usual, i was following the craze from behind but this time around, i wish i had caught the Adele fever faster than my stubborn old-school-versus-new-school-attitude would let me.

So here she is thrillingling beautiful, soulful and Rolling in the Deep.

Love Her!

Can't get enough of this

It's probably old news to most people out there but i like to follow the trends from the rear...if you catch my drift ;)

makes me feel like saying...well i didnt miss so much anyways...

so here's a song i cant get enough of...from behind of course...

Owning The Ankara

Hi all

While window shopping yesterday, i saw these very nice 'ankara' shoes in Aldo. I immediately felt pride seeing a thing that is known as proudly naija on dispaly in the streets of New York.

So i even proudly took a picture of my tie and dye bag which is also proudly naija, by the way :)

But hold on,....is Ankara a Naija commodity? I know we wear it a lot but i would really like to know the origin. Tye and Dye is from Ogun State RIGHT?!

Enjoy the pics!!! Poudly Naija

Home Away From Home

There are a lot of things  that make many of us qualify to be tagged "Nigerians in Diaspora". It might be the way we speak, the way we dress, the food we eat or even the jobs we find ourselves doing. Many times, we take pride in knowing that we can retain a certain degree of our "africanness" without having the white culture polluting what we call morals and values.

I went for a wedding party today and it was amusing to watch dollar bills were sprayed over the new couple and how people with law degrees gyrated to the music blaring from the speakers with the voice of Obesere in the air. Never mind the fact that these people would turn their noses at people who subcribed to such brand of music back home.

Well, back home things were different and now all we want is just a little Naijaness to get through the cold cold days ahead of us. I smiled at a man changing a hundred dollar bills into one dollar bills, i even relished the aroma of moin moin wrapped in foil because they couldnt find the banana leaves to tie the delicacy.

I will probably share more of my perception later tomorrow. I have to sleep now. What a partyyy!

Sweet Tooth

Got a sweet Tooth?
 Hi everyone...someone...anyone

It's official! I'm a full time blogger now and im loving it!!!

Now, im verrry impressed with the way Nigerian musicians seem to be taking the industry by storm. the opertaive word there being "industry". What i dont get- yet- is their thirst and desire to become agents of change with PDP. I know Music is a strong force and i applaud their decison to "stand up and be counted" but why have they turned themselves to politicians over night. I cant help but wonder how much the PDP would have paid someone like Stephanie Okereke to stand up on a campaign stage in Bayelsa screaming at the top of her lungs "Goodluck and Sambo 2011!!!!"
And i dont even want to mention Kanayo 'Ohh' Kanayo's political ambitions. I mean ...how much do they have to pay these people to lick asses and kiss dirty soles? Puleeezeeeeee

Using celebrities to campaign is the cheapest trick in the book. Just because 2011 made ir popular doesnt mean i'll vote for the person who was interviewed in the "koko mansion" oops...Aso rock.

I cant wait for the contoversial presidential debate to begin (NN24 or not!) cos im not giving anyone my vote under the influence of sweet talk or sweet biscuits!

So long nappy hair

I'm guilty of many things. one of which is not updating my blog as often as i used to. i think life caught up with me in the race but im determined ti take the lead anyway.

So....i decided to 'un nap' my nappy hair yesterday. i dont know why but um glad i did otherwise i wouldnt have anything to blog about now! here's a pic of my nappy hair. i like to think of this picture as a sort of memoir. So if i ever get to the point when i hate relaxed hair, i'll look at the pic and congratulate myself for staying nappy for 10 months! for enduring the tangleed bits and comb tru sessions.

no, im not a coward as many of my nappy hair sistas probably think. im on an adventure with my hair. and hey who says its important to have nappy hair anyway? or relaxed? or texturized? I am not my hair :)

so nice to be back ;)

Black Girls Don’t Blush

We were supposed to have lunch that afternoon. I wore a black tank top and a bright red skirt.

I didn’t look too desperate

You wore an aqua green shirt, like the color of the sea. My best friend would call it sky blue however.

Sky blue...aqua green…whatever

You said something nice about my top. If I was white I would have blushed all the way down to my neck with your eyes dancing all over my chest.

‘Tell me, do you play chess?’ I had my reasons for asking.

‘Chess is for losers, I spend my time wisely’

Oh well, I thought, what an irony.

You told me other things that made me laugh anyway. Some adult jokes, some funny pranks. My Mother would have a fit! But I am an adult. Seventeen years on this planet qualifies me. So there you go.

Our date crawled on like a caterpillar and turned into a moth when I felt your foot rubbing my thighs under the table. Oh no! It was only our second date and now I have to stop starting to like you.

The Philosophy of Childbirth

I scream, I groan

I curse, I moan

It’s not easy no doubt

But when it slips out

I smile with warmth engulfing my whole body

This is what it must feel like, to howl

The work of nature is big, brown and sturdy

It stares back at me from the toilet bowl

I’m a philosopher

And I just gave birth to shit.

Terry Tempest Williams

Just got this from a close friend and i couldnt resist the temptation to post it!!!

A manifesto, by author Terry Tempest Williams in a book on 'Creative Non-Fiction'

I write to make peace with the things I cannot control.
I write to create fabric in a world that often appears black and white.
I write to discover. I write to uncover. I write to meet my ghosts. I write to begin a dialogue.
I write to imagine things differently and in imagining things
differently perhaps the world will change.
I write to honor beauty. I write to correspond with my friends.
I write as a daily act of improvisation. I write because it creates my composure.
I write against power and for democracy.
I write myself out of my nightmares and into my dreams.
I write in a solitude born out of community.
I write to the questions that shatter my sleep. I write to the answers that make me complacent.
I write to remember. I write to forget. I write to the music that opens my heart. I write to quell the pain.
I write with the patience of melancholy in winter. I write because it allows me to confront that which I do not know.
I write as an act of faith. I write as an act of slowness.
I write to record what I love in the face of loss. I write because it makes me less fearful of death. I write as an exercise in pure joy.
I write as one who walks on the surface of a frozen river beginning to melt.
I write out of my anger and into my passion.
I write from the stillness of night anticipating -- always anticipating.
I write to listen. I write out of silence. I write to soothe the voices shouting inside me, outside me, all around me.
I write because I believe in words.
I write because it is a dance with paradox.
I write because you can play on the page like a child left alone in
sand.
I write because it is the way I take long walks.
I write because I believe it can create a path in darkness.
I write with a knife, carving each word from the generosity of trees.
I write as ritual.
I write out of my inconsistencies. I write with the colors of memory.
I write as a witness to what I have seen. I write as witness to what I imagine.
I write by grace and grit.
I write for the love of ideas.
I write for the surprise of a sentence.
I write with the belief of alchemists.
I write knowing I will always fail. I write knowing words always fall short.
I write knowing I can be killed by own words, stabbed by syntax, crucified by understanding and misunderstanding.
I write past the embarassment of exposure.
I trust nothing especially myself and slide head first into the familiar abyss of doubt and humiliation and threaten to push the delete button on my way down, or madly erase each line, pick up the paper and rip it into shreds -- and then I realise it doesn't matter, words are always a gamble, words are splinters from cut glass.
I write because it is dangerous, a bloody risk, like love, to form the words, to say the words, to touch the source, to be touched, to reveal how vulnerable we are, how transient.
I write as though I am whispering in the ear of the one I love.

Our parents did not suffer

I just had to post something today. I’ve almost been swallowed up my activities (work, planning my wedding, and more work...lol) Blogging is soooo different from writing for me and I’m still tryna catch up. For two weeks now I've carried tonnes of 'unwritten' stuff in my head and on tiny pieces of paper...verrrry frustrating. So here's one of them....

Our parents did not suffer
- or so they tell us
They told tales of days
when pepper was like water
-an endless river
When markets had no guards
You only came and bought what you wanted
The money tray untouched
They told us of their battle for freedom
The one we seem to claim today
“We fought for literacy”
“For the voice of the common man”
"Liberty of all minds and spirits”
-from the white man's oppression
We still fight after their Pyrrhic victory
We fight for light
For water
An average income for the common man
Equality for all men
We, the warriors are liberated captives
-of our own minds
A wasted war it is then
Shouldn’t we all just pack up
-and leave like the cowards that we are?

On a lighter note....

Dispatcher: 9-1-1 What's the nature of your emergency?

Caller: My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two

minutes apart

Dispatcher: Is this her first child?

Caller: No, you idiot! This is her husband!

Dispatcher: 9-1-1

Caller: Yeah, I'm having trouble breathing. I'm all out of breath.

Darn....I think I'm going to pass out.

Dispatcher: Sir, where are you calling from?

Caller: I'm at a pay phone. North and Foster.

Dispatcher: ! Sir, an ambulance is on the way. Are you an asthmatic?

Caller: No

Dispatcher: What were you doing before you started having trouble

breathing?

Caller: Running from the Police.

Okay..so im tired of ignoring the drama in this country. This one left a bitter sweet taste on my tongue...terrorism in Nigeria is a laughable probability but then again...isnt this a country where u must never say 'never'? anything can happen. this is just one of those confirmations. So what do u guys think????

Boko Haram ressurects, declares total Jihad

Headlines Aug 14, 2009
The Islamic sect Boko Haram has declared total Jihad in Nigeria, threatening to Islamise the entire nation by force of war.
In a statement dated August 9, 2009 and made available to Vanguard, the sect whose activities led to the lost of hundreds of lives in northern Nigeria recently declared that their leader Yusuf who was killed in controversial circumstances during the crisis, lives forever.

In what looked like a declaration of war on the rest of the nation, the Boko Haram sect said it will unleash terror in Southern Nigeria this August, beginning with the bombing of Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu to make good its words.Vanguard reproduces the statement below as issued by Boko Haram.WE SPEAK AS BOKO HARAMFor the first time since the Killing of Mallam Mohammed Yusuf, our leader, we hereby make the following statements.

1) First of all that Boko Haram does not in any way mean ‘Western Education is A sin’ as the infidel media continue to portray us. Boko Haram actually means ‘Western Civilisation’ is forbidden. The difference is that while the first gives the impression that we are opposed to formal education coming from the West, that is Europe, which is not true, the second affirms our believe in the supremacy of Islamic culture (not Education), for culture is broader, it includes education but not determined by Western Education.
