When someone we love goes away

I've always wondered what it felt like for people who lose their loved ones. I didn't have to wonder anymore when my lovely aunt passed away yesterday.

I am still in shock and can't believe 3 days ago was the last time i would ever hear her voice..and no, i will not be seeing her again, not in this life.

We cry because our loss hurts. For afterall, it is OUR loss. The person we weep for is in a better and would rather we celebrate.

Rest in peace Aunty. You will be sorely missed.

Weird things people do with Facebook

Facebook is not just a social media anymore, its now a 'toasting' media. May the smoothest talker win. i have many grudges with the site but like one of those necessary evils, i cant avoid taking a peek at people's profiles once in a while. For some, its a journal, with details (sordid and mild) of their private lives for all to view and "like".

For others, Facebook is a medium of attack. If someone offends you, i heard it's more effective to state the offence on your facebook status while everyone else wonders who could be owing you money or who broke your heart. This tactic, i heard it is supposed to make the guilty 'friend' crawl back to you or seeth in anger while plotting their own status attack! Intersteing heh? see why they've got most of us hooked? Some people (like me) are addicted to gist and can even be described as pathological people watchers. We love to find out who just had a baby and who the baby looks like. We love to 'like' people's wedding photos and 'awwwww' over pictures of couples in their intimate moments.

Some people's fingers are so sticky on the like button that even if Osama Bin Laden posted something like this ' I just had a wonderful time flying two planes into the world trade center buildings',  I am sure he will get someone to 'like' the update. Who in the world likes those crazy updates?

Now, back to facebook as a tool for toasting. I received a message on facebook that quotes:

"you seem to be a doctor. i am sick and my head jst started spinning thinking of u since last night what can i do to u quench it?"

This is just one out of a couple of messages i get once in a while from people who actually have pictures on their profile.(seriously?!!) At first i thought it couldn't be anything but spam but then again...you never know. Crazy world we live in.

Busy Bee

I have not been blogging much these days. In fact, i have not been doing much of anything but being busy! Yea...my lasagna making days are over..gone with my weekends! If you can guess by now, i'm now a working class chic. lol (i wish) But anyways, i now have a job besides staying home experimenting with recipes and blogging of course! Soooo.... in between all that and moving into a new apartment, ive been busy.

Its not an easy job but im glad it pays. Woman must wack na (abi no be so?) Anyways, thats not an excuse if i intend to be a writer someday in the future i must write!

So here i am in McDonalds (yea i dont have internet access yet) blogging. I just hope i don't get huge on the food here all in the name of blogging!

So on and on i blab....How are u guys? any gist for me (i like to amuse myself sometimes, indulge me please)

I read Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid and i think its simply fantastic. Books like that leave me miserable cos i cant help wishing i could write as good as people like Ms Kincaid. Anyways, i totally recommend the book and will be back for a full review. Also currently reading Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat. Two reviews coming up soon.

Cheers!

When Friends are Scarce

A poem for my very special reader (s)
You know yourself
Yea...you
This is for you

This is for you dear friend
You who chose to stand by me
When world turned its back
This is for you mi amore.

You who remembers not to forget
Every single memory we made
In a place where all we had was love
This is for you mi amore.

For making me smile when i didnt want to
Telling me the truth when it made me mad
Laughing at my silly ways
This is for you mi amore.

I choose not to forget you
Your voice that still brings comfort
Strangely so after all these years
Nuestro amor nunca morirĂ¡.

So apart from making meat pies and lasagna, i have been obsessively buying books (window shopping or not! thank you) and reading them! I wish i did more writing though but i wont beat myself up about it. No, not today!

So here's a list of inspiring authors i think you should read with some of their wonderful books

This is an intriguing one about a girl trying to understand so much about herself and the world around her. Cant wait to finish it!

Making Meat Pies

Boredom has a way of bringing out the best (or worst) in us. It all depends on what we choose. Although i have to admit that making the right choice isn't always easy but anything is possible.

So lately, i've been staying at home doing nothing but read, read, eat, eat and you'd think i would put some time into blogging (ha ha ha).

At least i'm doing things worth blogging about...not sure anyone would want to read about everything though. So let me entice you with my Meat Pie recipe and pictures.

Needless to say that making meatpies isn't exactly as easy as a piece of pie (forgive the pun) I tried it once thinking i'd just mix all the ingredients and scoffing the measurements. Well it turns out i made meat stones instead!

So yesterday, i gave it another try and im posting the recipe/pictures for people like me with enough time on their hands. Expect more recipes from this blog if i dont procastinate!

Meat Pie Recipe (Naija Style)

Meat Filling

-small potatoes, diced and cooked (to save time, use frozen hash brown potato cubes)

-lean ground beef (or chicken, or turkey)

-frozen mixed vegetables, cooked (I use the peas, carrots and corn mix)

-onion diced

-red and green sweet peppers, diced

- seasonings (salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, knorr/maggie etc, whatever you like)

Dough

1/2 cup butter (1 stick) (it should be cold and hard)

1 1/2 cups flour

1 teaspoon salt

4-6 tablespoons ice water

-Prepare the filling by browning your meat and spices. WHile it's cooking, stirfry your peppers and onion and veggies. Mix it all together. Taste and adjust seasoning to taste.

-Once ground beef is cooked, add the diced cooked potatoes and heat for 5 minutes. (not too much potatoes). The main purpose is to aborb excesss liquid from the meat mixture, so that you don't end up with soggy meat pies.

-To make dough: Sift together dry ingredients and cut the butter into the dry ingredients with a fork until mixture is crumbly.

-While mixing with a wooden spoon, add water a tablespoon at a time until dough holds together in a ball (you may need more or less water. Just add small amounts at a time). If the dough is crumbly, add a little more water by drops until the dough stays together when you pinch it.

-When dough comes together into a ball roll out the dough until flat.

- Cut out circles (I use a giant cookie cutter for this). If dough becomes sticky or too soft put in fridge for 10 minutes to cool and then take it out again and continue cutting the circles.

-Place meat stuffing in center of pastry circles.

-Fold over and seal using a fork.

-Bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until lightly browned.

Note: This recipe doesnt exactly make the softest meat pies but im still trying to find out what its lacking...

Adele

Apart from my ability to comprehend how a girl like this could go by a name that seems so african...the operative word being "seems" here... mind you, there was nothing fascinating about Adele (Uh-dell)

And as usual, i was following the craze from behind but this time around, i wish i had caught the Adele fever faster than my stubborn old-school-versus-new-school-attitude would let me.

So here she is thrillingling beautiful, soulful and Rolling in the Deep.

Love Her!

Can't get enough of this

It's probably old news to most people out there but i like to follow the trends from the rear...if you catch my drift ;)

makes me feel like saying...well i didnt miss so much anyways...

so here's a song i cant get enough of...from behind of course...

Owning The Ankara

Hi all

While window shopping yesterday, i saw these very nice 'ankara' shoes in Aldo. I immediately felt pride seeing a thing that is known as proudly naija on dispaly in the streets of New York.

So i even proudly took a picture of my tie and dye bag which is also proudly naija, by the way :)

But hold on,....is Ankara a Naija commodity? I know we wear it a lot but i would really like to know the origin. Tye and Dye is from Ogun State RIGHT?!

Enjoy the pics!!! Poudly Naija

Home Away From Home

There are a lot of things  that make many of us qualify to be tagged "Nigerians in Diaspora". It might be the way we speak, the way we dress, the food we eat or even the jobs we find ourselves doing. Many times, we take pride in knowing that we can retain a certain degree of our "africanness" without having the white culture polluting what we call morals and values.

I went for a wedding party today and it was amusing to watch dollar bills were sprayed over the new couple and how people with law degrees gyrated to the music blaring from the speakers with the voice of Obesere in the air. Never mind the fact that these people would turn their noses at people who subcribed to such brand of music back home.

Well, back home things were different and now all we want is just a little Naijaness to get through the cold cold days ahead of us. I smiled at a man changing a hundred dollar bills into one dollar bills, i even relished the aroma of moin moin wrapped in foil because they couldnt find the banana leaves to tie the delicacy.

I will probably share more of my perception later tomorrow. I have to sleep now. What a partyyy!

Sweet Tooth

Got a sweet Tooth?
 Hi everyone...someone...anyone

It's official! I'm a full time blogger now and im loving it!!!

Now, im verrry impressed with the way Nigerian musicians seem to be taking the industry by storm. the opertaive word there being "industry". What i dont get- yet- is their thirst and desire to become agents of change with PDP. I know Music is a strong force and i applaud their decison to "stand up and be counted" but why have they turned themselves to politicians over night. I cant help but wonder how much the PDP would have paid someone like Stephanie Okereke to stand up on a campaign stage in Bayelsa screaming at the top of her lungs "Goodluck and Sambo 2011!!!!"
And i dont even want to mention Kanayo 'Ohh' Kanayo's political ambitions. I mean ...how much do they have to pay these people to lick asses and kiss dirty soles? Puleeezeeeeee

Using celebrities to campaign is the cheapest trick in the book. Just because 2011 made ir popular doesnt mean i'll vote for the person who was interviewed in the "koko mansion" oops...Aso rock.

I cant wait for the contoversial presidential debate to begin (NN24 or not!) cos im not giving anyone my vote under the influence of sweet talk or sweet biscuits!
